Jobs associated with family members

Father works as one of the 2000+ fishermen in St Lucia. He likes his job as business is good: lately fish consumption has increased due to expansion of the tourism sector and increased local demand for fish, as people want to be healthier. There are increasing constraints on banana production on the international market: he is glad ne chose to be a fisherman and not a plantation farmer like his father.

Mother helps to sell my father’s fishing catch, acting as a ‘financial manager’. She works out how much money has been spent on bait and gas and then divides the rest amongst the boat owner and captain. She also works part time at Hewanorra airport on the check-in desks.

Brother Karic takes some of the fish up to the fishing village of Dennery to cook and sell for the ‘Fish Fry’ every Friday.

Hobbies and Interests

Dance and swimming club at school, beach picnics and entering the school pageant (winners have dinner at Jalousie Hilton and Ladera hotels).

I like studying in the Agricultural Science classes and also Mathematics.

Economy overview

Changes in the EU import preference regime and the increased competition from Latin American bananas have made economic diversification increasingly important in Saint Lucia. The island nation has been able to attract foreign business and investment, especially in its offshore banking and tourism industries. The manufacturing sector is the most diverse in the Eastern Caribbean area, and the government is trying to revitalize the banana industry. Economic fundamentals remain solid, even though unemployment needs to be cut.
