Favourite moment so far in career

Teaching abroad in a children’s home in Southern India.

Favourite part of the trip

Standing in the plunge pool of a waterfall in Dominica, being pounded by the water from above, in an area untouched by tourism.

Least favourite part of the trip

Sitting on my suitcase in the airport on St Vincent in the baking heat, suffering from salmonella(?)

Favourite place during trip

The beach at Bequia next to the turtle sanctuary…although Rodney Bay beach probably brings back the happiest memory.

Favourite theme/ topic to teach

Cross-curricular Geography work – something on India!

Whilst on the trip I learnt that…

I (just about) had the stamina to trek 14 miles through rainforest and across mountains to a boiling lake (and that this could be enjoyable!).

Most inspirational moment on trip

Champagne Beach , Dominica : bubbles stream from the ocean floor! Amazing!

How would my students describe me?

The one with the African land snails in her classroom!

Favourite moment so far in career Teaching in a mud hut (as a Global Teacher) and training Geography teachers in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Favourite part of the trip Flying between the Windward Islands and seeing the spectacular views.
Least favourite part of the trip 5am starts to catch flights between the islands.
Favourite place during trip Dominica –being in a rainforest retreat with little humming birds in the trees.
Favourite theme/ topic to teach South Africa - any human geography theme.
Whilst on the trip I learnt that… Caribbean people are the friendliest people on earth. Also that good Caribbean bananas are rejected because UK buyers do not like ones with marks on the skin.
Most inspirational moment on trip St Vincent - walking around the markets and streets. I could not believe that the people are so friendly.

How would my students describe me? The teacher who likes Winnie the Pooh and has African music drifting down the corridor...

Favourite moment so far in career

Selling fruit and veg grown in our school grounds at Bromley Farmers market with students from the school

Favourite part of the trip

Walking through a tropical downpour in the rainforest on the slopes of the Soufriere Volcano in St Vincent.

Least favourite part of the trip

Whilst snorkelling in Champage Beach, Dominica, I realised that I didn’t have my waterproof camera and I couldn’t take photos of the amazing underwater bubbles.

Favourite place during trip

Sitting in the thermal baths of the eco-lodge in Dominica drinking rum punch surrounded by rainforest.

Favourite theme/ topic to teach

Collaborative action research based on outdoor activities.

Whilst on the trip I learnt that…

‘Fair Trade’ is incredibly important to Windward banana growers. It gives them the opportunity to sell in British supermarkets alongside much larger banana companies from other parts of the world.

Most inspirational moment on trip

Chasing dolphins of the coast of St Lucia with the Pitons in the background.

The one with the messy classroom who lets us work outside a lot.

Name Andrew Wilson

Favourite moment so far in career

Having a year 11 pupil who I supported, pushed, pulled, forced and helped come back to me after he left to thank me for getting him the GCSE that allowed him to pursue his dreams at college and being selected for the Windward Isle trip.

Favourite part of the trip

After a long hike up the La Soufriere Volcano on St. Vincent, the mist suddenly cleared to see the magnificent crater and lava dome in all its glory, what an amazing site! Then getting drenched in a tropical downpour on the way back, a very refreshing shower, wonderful and a great laugh.

Least favourite part of the trip

After reaching the boiling lake on Dominica after a tough half-day trek through rainforest and mountains, then realizing that I had to walk all the way back again whilst desperate for the toilet.

Favourite place during trip

Relaxing in the natural hot springs with the group in the rainforest on Dominica drinking a bottle or two of Kubuli beer.

Favourite theme/ topic to teach

Natural Hazards specifically Tectonics and Sustainability.

Whilst on the trip I learnt that…

Despite the daily hardships of living on beautiful small islands such as St. Vincent, Dominica and St Lucia the people are friendly, welcoming, relaxed, happy and resourceful. They will always depend on the decisions of richer countries such as ours to make a living and we should support them.

Most inspirational moment on trip

Meeting the fantastic Windward Isles hosts and making new friends in such a beautiful and diverse place.
