Windwards Isles - Main Menu - Fairtrade in the Windward Islands

How can it be used?

In this resource you will find several PowerPoints and a Word document.

The PowerPoint presentations ‘Question of Bananas’ and a ‘Question of growing Bananas’ are two fun starters. These could be used to set the scene for other activities described elsewhere in Look Windwards!

The PowerPoint presentation ‘Impact of Fairtrade’ is a more detailed attempt to cover the main issues on Fairtrade. There are statements, which the students have to sort into three categories- economic, social and environmental. The Word document ‘Impact of the Banana Industry’ goes over the same material and can be given as a handout at the end of the lesson or can be used as a stand alone piece if time is short.

Who is it for?

The starter activities have been designed for Key Stage 3 or 4- depending on your class’s ability.

‘The Impact of Fairtrade’ is more suited to GCSE.

How does it address the curriculum?

The material can be used to support many parts of the geography national curriculum and GCSE Geography specifications. There is cross-curricular potential particularly with citizenship.
