James Turner's grandfather ran a cut flower nursery in Liverpool.
His father, having gone into farming, went back into cut flowers in Sussex in 1958, starting his own business in 1960.
There were major problems in the industry in the 1970s, due to fuel crises in 1974 and 1979.
Eventually the cut flower business ceased in 1990. However, in 1983 the nursery diversified into garden plants and joined the Farplants co-operative when a vacancy came up.
