Potato CouncilThe Potato Council works to improve competitiveness and increasing usage of GB potatoes. It is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) funded by potato growers and trade purchasers.

The Potato Council’s educational website supports teaching children to eat healthily and it will help familiarise children with the potato’s journey from planting to eating. It contains:
• Worksheets: all linked to the formal curriculum
• Games: find out how potatoes grow and get from plough to plate, as well as why potatoes are good for you.
• Teachers centre: find out about available resources, curriculum links, farm visits, useful recipes and more.
• Grow Your Own Potatoes area

2. Teachers Pack

A teacher’s pack is available containing copies of worksheets, colouring sheets, fascinating facts, a wordsearch and printed resources.

3. Grow your own potatoes

The Potato Council organises a Grow Your Own Potatoes scheme for schools to help children learn about where their food comes from and how things grow. If you haven’t joined in with this year’s project you can still grow your own potatoes and make use of the resources. Visit www.potatoesforschools.org.uk and in the Grow Your Own Potatoes area you will find:
• Growing potatoes game – a fun activity for children to learn about what potatoes need so that they grow well.
• Potato growing factsheets – find out how to grow your own potatoes. One factsheet gives instructions on planting and the other gives growing tips.
• SMART Board presentation - find out how potatoes grow in the field and in a bucket.
• Potato growing worksheets – supporting growing your own potatoes are a number of worksheets that link into the formal curriculum. There are 4 worksheets for Key Stage 1, as well as 4 for Key Stage 2.
• Potato Cam (March – June) – a British Potato Council expert grows a potato plant at the same time as the schools. Watch the plants progress and see what’s happening below the soil.

4. Resources for school meal providers

A pack to support primary school caterers holding a Potato Day, looking at different potato varieties or cooking methods.  Having a Potato Day can be fun, highlight healthier eating and can encourage children to have a school lunch. It contains:
 A comprehensive guide
 10 nutritionally balanced recipe cards
 A poster to promote the day
 Stickers for children who have a potato day lunch
 A poster promoting the benefits of potatoes

A new website which provides teachers and children with up-to-date, accurate and consistent information about healthy eating. The website has been developed by the British Nutrition Foundation in association with the British Meat Education Service, Potato Council, Home Grown Cereals Authority, Horticultural Development Council and the Milk Development Council.
