These materials were originally produced by Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to help farmers make the most of school visits arranged as part of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and Higher Level Entry Scheme. |
Syngenta also provided funding to make the materials more widely available.
These materials and templates can be adapted quickly and easily to reflect your own local situation, and the facilities and resources available for school parties.

Children almost always learn best by “doing”. When they attend shows and events, they may spend some time listening and observing but they also benefit from the opportunity to get involved in activities. As well as enjoying themselves, children will develop a variety of manipulative and creative skills.
This booklet has come about by the sharing of ideas amongst members of the FACE team who attend many events for children during the year.
Please send us your ideas to add to these! Email:

FACE held a seminar looking at self-guided trails.
Trails are a popular way of taking groups around farms and other outdoor locations. Self-guided trails have many advantages because each group can go around the site without the help of additional staff.
At the seminar, we investigated a number of different types of trail. Examples are included here for you to adapt for your own site. Stoneleigh Park does not have the facilities you would expect to find at a farm visit centre or on a working farm so we had to be creative in the production of our examples!
