bayerface_small.jpgThe second Bayer/FACE Awards for farmers working with schools was held at the prestigious Kensington Roof Gardens on September 5th.

Bayer / FACE Awards 2008 WinnersThe event celebrated the best in farming education and was attended by the winning farmers and invited guests.  A large number of applications had been considered and evaluated.  It was nott an easy task for the judges to reach their decisions because of the high quality of the entries which came from all over England and Wales.

The awards were presented by Sir Mike Tomlinson as follows:

Farm to Classroom Award &  The very best in farming education award 2008
(overall winner)

Ian and Lyndsay ShearsIan & Lyndsay Shears of  Highfield Farm,  Topsham,  Devon.
Ian runs a Seed to Loaf roadshow during which children see and feel wheat plants and grain, grind their own wheat in a hand-powered stone mill and then make bread rolls which are baked in a wood fired oven!  

Access Award:
Ms Julie Plumley of Rylands FarmMs Julie Plumley of Rylands Farm, Sherborne, Dorset.  
Students who struggle in mainstream school are welcomed to Rylands Farm. There they experience many opportunities on the farm which often result in the recognition of new and unrecognized skills and achievements. The young people learn “that the countryside is not a boring place for old people” and work in small groups to take part in all aspects of animal care and welfare.

 

Careers Award:
the-croft.jpgMs Susan Aglionby of The Croft, Houghton, Carlislel
Susan works with teenagers offering residential work experience placements.  The young people learn about caring for the soil and plants, animal and human health.  They get involved in all aspects of work on the farm under close supervision.  This gives them invaluable insights into a farmer’s life and to that of the livestock from conception to market stall.

 

 

 

Biodiversity Award:
dorrington.jpgSteve & Jane Ellsmoor of Dorrington Hall Farm near Crewe.
The Ellsmoors demonstrate a passion for their land in Shropshire and enjoy sharing this with visiting groups. Children see the field margins, ponds, new hedgerows and meadows and learn all about the wildlife that these habitats support.
  

Innovation Award:
westmorland.jpgMs Christine Knipe representing Westmorland County Agricultural Society.
Westmorland run a bi-ennial farm visit with a vast army of 100 volunteers, mainly farmers.  “Stations” are located around a traditional farm and the children learn about sheep shearing, poultry rearing, drystone walling and many other aspects of farming whilst being involved in fun, hands-on activities.

 

 

FACE and Bayer were privileged to welcome these farmers to the awards ceremony and congratulate all of them. Thanks also go to all the other farmers who were not selected as winners in 2008 and we commend all the excellent work going on.
