BBC Breathing Places Schools is a 2 year project that launched in January 2008. The aims of the project are:

• To make simple improvements for UK biodiversity.
• To encourage children to learn about wildlife in an active manner
• To enable all schools to take part, regardless of budget or time constraints

FACE promotes farm visits where children can find out how farmers look after the farm environment and thereby encourage a wide diversity of wildlife.

A folder of activities has been produced to accompany farm trips along with a poster highlighting the environmental work done by farmers today.

It is fascinating to hear from farmers themselves about why they are interested in biodiversity. The farmer case studies are adapted form the CPRE/NFU publication Living Landscapes.

The Warriner School Farm in Oxfordshire has supplied us with a new resource which is a snail survey to carry out in your school grounds. It is designed to be shared with the pupils on an interactive whiteboard if you have one available.

A visit to Paddock House Farm by pupils from Woodlands Junior School in North Yorkshire stimulated some creative work including a PowerPoint presentation on using willow as a fuel and biodiversity on the farm. Download it here.

This year is the International Year of the Potato which aims to show the role that the potato can play in providing food security and eradicating poverty. These two posters have been produced to demonstrate the biodiversity of the potato and some of its many wild relatives which eventually led to the potato we know today.
