ELS Farm Enterprise

ELS Farm EnterpriseThis unit of work is a practical introduction to environmental management and has been written as a decision-making activity incorporating fieldwork. It is suitable for GCSE and GCE students following Geography, Environmental Science or Land Based courses but could also be used in Enterprise Education and PHSE initiatives.

The approach to this unit is characterised by an emphasis on questions and issues that arise from the inter-relationship between farmers and their environment. ‘Environment’ is used here in its widest sense to include the physical, business and behavioural environments influencing and influenced by farmers. Students who undertake this unit take on the role of a farm manager and are actively involved in the process of opening up and enquiring into the questions and issues that farmers encounter when they decide to take part in the government’s Environmental Stewardship scheme administered by Natural England.

Teachers will need to select a suitable farm for this work, perhaps by contacting their local Natural England office, see Section 9, References and Contacts.
