What kinds of educational activities take place at farms?
What educational activities do different kinds of farms offer?
How can farm visits be beneficial for pupils and their teachers?
The case studies presented here provide answers to these questions. They give a flavour of the variety of educational activities that take place on farms around the country. This includes activities: • for different age groups/educational needs (early years, primary school, secondary school and special school) • with different learning aims (curriculum learning, experiential learning, vocational learning, personal development and learning about sustainability) • at different kinds of farms (working farms, open farms, city farms, residential farms and school/college farms).
|
It is hoped that that these case studies will be helpful and stimulating for teachers and farm educators interested in making the most of farms as environments for learning. To help teachers and farm educators find the case studies that are most relevant to their interests, the tables below categorise the case studies by educational age group (Table 1) and type of farm (Table 2).
Note: The case studies were written by an educational research consultant, Dr Mark Rickinson, on the basis of interviews with a member of staff at each of the farms. This work was carried out on behalf of Access to Farms with funding from the Department for Education and Skills.
