What better words of praise could we have received about the FACE/FFS Regional Conference held at Annable's Farm in Hertfordshire?
Over 40 attendees enjoyed the stunning surroundings of Ian Pigott's new Farmschool where we discussed "Growing links for the future of agriculture and related industries."
Dan Corlett, Chief Executive of FACE, explained the progress of the Bright Crop initiative which is building a network of ambassadors keen to go into schools to enthuse young people who might otherwise never hear about the range of careers available in the sector.
Dr Adelia de Paula highlighted the work being carried out at Rothamsted Research to engage young people in scientific debate and she was followed by Esther Bennett of the Institurte of Physics who is eager to show how much physics is involved in farming and related industries and to overhaul the outdated view of physics.
David Jones, Farm Manager of Morley Farms in Norfolk has devised some innovative ways of explaining to youngsters and consumers of all age the use of maths on his farm. He treated us to a viewing of some of his "Farming is Magic" videos which can be seen here: www.farmingismagic.co.uk
Ben Williams, Head of Agriculture at Redbourne Upper School, Ampthill, gave a frank, entertaining and informative account of his work and the current delivery of agricultural education at his school.
After an excellent locally sourced lunch provided by Ian and Gilly Pigott and their staff (with delicious cakes baked by Moya Myerscough the FACE Co-ordinator who arranged the day), delegates listened to Gary Richardson, Chief Executive of Countryside Learning as he enthused about his work running estate days and Countryside Live events which accommodate large numbers of children and expose them to life today in the countryside.
The afternoon session moved into a variety of workshops including: Egg Science; Using OPAL guides; Potato batteries; Felt making; Thermal properties of farmyard materials; and Sugar awareness!
Dan Corlett brought the day to a close by asking delegates to draw up a wish list of ideas to progress links for the future; and to pledge what they would offer after the day.
