Farming Week

Activities on the farm are the same each week of the year:

  • Mating
  • Farrowing
  • Weaning
  • Selection
  • On and off testing of pigs
  • Pressure washing
  • Moving pigs
  • Loading pigs for sale
  • Building and equipment maintenance as required

From mating to farrowing (giving birth) takes 116 days.

The piglets are weaned 24 days later.

The sow then has 5 days before she is mated again.

High levels of stockmanship, welfare and housing are considered by JSR to be the vital elements for humane animal production and provide freedom from:

  • Hunger and thirst
  • Discomfort or pain
  • Injury or disease
  • Fear and stress
  • Abnormal behaviour
