Meadow Farm near the village of Woodfield is part of a family farming company trading as John Griffin and Son(Farms) Ltd. The farming company encompasses three other farms: Hill Farm, Wood Farm (all of which are within 3 miles of Meadow Farm), and Marsh Farm which is 7 miles away. The farm office and main farming operation is located at Meadow Farm. A timeline of the history of the Griffin's family farm business is given in Resource 6

1887Grandfather Griffin is born at Meadow Farm and later farms. He is an arable and livestock farmer and a cattledealer
1931John Griffin is born at Meadow Farm. Grandfather Griffin rents Hill Farm
(110hectares). It is an arable and dairy farm. He continues as a cattle dealer,
importing store cattle from Ireland. He also grows soft fruit for the London market
1944 Grandfather Griffin purchases Hill Farm
1953Grandfather Griffin dies and his son, John Griffin, takes over
1955John Griffin purchases an adjacent farm called Wood Farm(125 hectares).
1959 Richard Griffin is born at Meadow Farm
1962Tim Griffin is born at Meadow Farm
1965John Griffin purchases a small parcel (69 hectares)of arable farmland adjacent to
Hill Farm
1970The dairy herd moves from Meadow to Hill Farm and increases in size from 45 to
100 cows
1980John Griffin purchases Marsh Farm(107 hectares) an all arable farm
1994 John Griffin hands over the running of the farm to his sons, Richard and Tim Griffin. They expand the dairy herd from 100 to 140 cows and build two new cow sheds. A
new milking parlour is planned.
1999Richard and Tim Griffin purchase 10 hectares of woodland adjacent to Marsh farm
2000Richard and Tim sell the dairy herd in order to concentrate on arable and beef cattle farming
2002Richard and Tim secure a contract with a large supermarket to supply them with
green beans produced on Hill Farm, when they are in season.

2003
Local and foreign labour are employed to harvest the green beans and the Griffins make
a profit

At present John Griffin has principal responsibility for the overall administration of the business and also runs the farm office and day to day management of the farm staff. His two sons Richard and Tim are responsible for the arable crops and irrigation unit and the farm equipment and beef cattle respectively.
Farm staff is:
1 full time herd manager
2 full time tractor drivers
1 part time office clerk
+ up to 30 casual staff for peak periods as required. One third of these workers are local but the farm also employs 5 or 6 students during their summer vacations and overseas workers from Poland
The extra staff is only needed during a limited time in the summer when the green beans have to be harvested. Beans are planted at regular intervals through May and June and harvested by hand during July to September. The harvesting of the beans is intensive and students and other seasonal workers are employed for picking and grading the beans which must meet high quality standards expected and imposed by the supermarket.
