Work style and time requirements

The same style of working is used for each unit. Following a brief introductory note about the aim of the unit, you will be taken through a series of activities or exercises - reading, listing, note making, website visiting etc - as part of the self-teaching process. Some of these activities will require you to consult resources in the Resource Box and possibly elsewhere, e.g. on other websites. Direct links are provided wherever possible.

You may well find it best to print out the resources as you need them, which will allow you to make notes on them and highlight key passages. You will also find it useful to refer to the various sections of the FACE website for ideas and resources.

Time requirements

Each activity within the units is accompanied by a note suggesting how much time you will need to complete it. For example:

TOPIC 1 [45 minutes]
Why do schools want to visit farms?

This guidance on time is approximate and is included to help you plan your progress through the course. In some cases you may need to find an uninterrupted hour or more; in other instances, a slot of 30 minutes might be all that is required. In most cases, you can break down the exercises into separate steps if an uninterrupted period of time is impractical. How much time you actually spend is, of course, up to you! Where an assessment task is part of an activity, extra time will be needed to complete it.

Assessment Tasks: Instructions for the assessment tasks can be found throughout each unit, and are clearly marked. For these tasks, guidance is given on the approximate length or size of the finished product, but these are minimum suggestions that you are free to exceed.
