The Farming Year

Month Activities

April
Lambing time for 350 ewes.

May
All lambing finished and sheep, back in fields with new lambs. The first lambs are ready to sell when they have reached a weight of 40 kg. So first lambs may be ready to sell now. Wheat crops have fertiliser, mainly nitrogen applied. Depending on if the price is right, cattle will be bought in from the local market/s.

June
Shearing time for the ewes and silage is cut and stored. Cattle are summer grazing.

July
Hay cutting and bailing provided the weather is dry. Approximately 30 acres of hay is made, but this does vary.

August
Wheat is harvested. Pheasants are bought in to rear and release into woodland areas.

September
Silage bales are shifted into barns ready for winter feeding.

October
Ground cultivations-ploughing, harrowing, rolling and drilling of crops for next year. Depending on ground conditions, cattle may need to be housed from now through the winter.

November
Herbicide sprays applied to arable crops. Crops are in early development stages. Attention is given to preparing for game shoots.

December
The farm host 5 shooting days-a chance for friends and family to get together.

January
All sheds have to be cleaned and disinfected ready for lambing.
